Florida-Cuba Mission Ministry
| St. Luke's has begun to stretngthen our relationship with our sister church in Melones, Cuba, based on mutual respect and collaboration under the auspices of the Methodists United in Prayer initiative of the Florida Conference. A team from St. Luke's traveled to Cuba in October 2010 to learn from them how best we can initiate this collaboration. |

The contrast between these two churches is at first glance striking indeed-the largest Methodist church in Florida paired with one of the smallest Methodist congregations in Cuba. But our team who engaged this congregation in October 2010 found these people are filled with the joy their strong faith provides them. In their Sunday evening service, that joy is evident. |
|
Hurricane Ike in 2008 ravaged Melones and destroyed the church buildings. Out of the rubble, the congregation was able to build temporary housing for the pastor. Their church, for the moment, is a thatched roof over a concrete slab. Their first goal is to rebuild the parsonage and then to construct a new church. Planning and preparation for these tasks is well underway and St. Luke's intends to aid the church in completing these projects to the extent we can under our licenses from the US State Department.
More importantly, the true goal of this initiative is to establish a strong, prayerful relationship with our brothers and sisters in this small church and in fact to learn as much form them as they do from us. The difficulties these Christians face has strengthened their faith and taught them to focus on those things that are essential. |
