Effective Use of Job Boards
Advice and Key Points
- Use job boards as one of your methods of searching, but do not spend an inordinate amount of time visiting job boards.
- Go where employers are going - to niche websites rather than super sites like Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs.
- Spend more time on job boards that target a specific industry, your profession, and a geographic area including local community-based sites.
- Clean up your personal pages in case prospective employers find them.
- Register with the sites that you are interested in, and post your resume.
- Write clear, short and simple online resumes. Focus on quantifiable assets.
- Include words and phrases - key words from the job posting.
- Stay active in a variety of social-networking sites, especially geared to your profession, city, and supportive interests groups.
- The success rate in finding a job through job boards is not that good. However, a regional or specialty job board may have just the job you are looking for, and you may be exactly what the employer needs.
